Crest is the currency used in the port city to help bridge the gap between all the Sharyshan currencies and the bartering system used by Tetrans. It can represent both money and assets, an abstract system that allows players and the GM to rely less on bookkeeping. Crests can also be spent to cause a flashback, buy features, purchase training, or upgrade your charter. It is unreasonable for the average person to carry excessive amounts of Crests on their person. Think of Crest like a large wad of money – if you lose it, it can impact your life immediately. Most people keep their Crests in a secure place, like a bank, and use Crest bills for important purchases or an implanted chip to for minor daily purchases.
“Life is a wild ride in the port city. One minute you’re slinging chips for a couple of Skimmeri, the next minute you’re dead broke and taking a second job just to keep your charter alive. Crests come in and go out like the tide.”
Day-to-day expenses like normal meals or other small purchases do not require tracking. However, if you enjoy the bookkeeping that some games provide, the below is a breakdown for the average exchange rates between the main currencies used by Breakaway citizens. These rates can vary when goods or services are exchanged for money.
Crest | Barter | Tad | Lan | Aro | Nena |
1 | A Week's Work | 700 | 550 | 1,250 | 300 |
Weapons
Because all weapons require a permit, a standard weapon that does 1 damage costs 1 Crest every 6 months. A weapon that does 2 damage requires a more expensive permit, and costs 5 Crest every 6 months. Weapons that do 3 damage either do not exist or are illegal and exorbitantly expensive.
Protective Clothing
Protection worn on your arms, legs, head, and so on costs 1 Crest for a full set to purchase and 1 Crest to upkeep or repair between fights. It reduces incoming damage by 1. Nothing currently exists that can block 2 incoming damage. If it did, it would be experimental and possibly dangerous.
Gadgets
If an item gives you a narrative or mechanical benefit once a session, it should have a cost of at least 1 Crest. An item that can be used several times in a session for a benefit should have a cost of 3 Crest. An item that has extended use over several sessions should cost 5 Crest. What type of item and its bonus is up to you, with approval from the Charter Authority.Other Items
See the following for examples of potential costs for goods or services. Items that are considered “fluff”, or for role-playing purposes only, do not require purchase. Only items or services that impact the story or game have a cost. If not sure, general goods, and materials are listed. If a fluff item becomes part of the story, it should require a cost.Examples |
